Larder: Coffee

1

So, it may not be ‘good for you’ in the boring, traditional sense, but a mug of the piping hot black stuff has been working wonders on Gobbler mornings for as long as we care to remember. The problem is that we, as a nation, spend an ungodly amount per annum in coffee shops, when with a flask and a spoon or two of the good stuff listed below, we could free up this cash to spend on something worthwhile, like a bit of cake to go with it.

Original fairtrade blend, The co-operative
227g
£2.15

This is a really drinkable, everyday blend. A wonderfully fruity aroma and light, nutty taste mean it’s easy to drink on, and on.

Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference
Sumatra Mandheling (fairtrade)
227g
£2.45 (2 for £4)

The smell of this one would have you eating spoonfuls from the bag. It’s rich and dark, but still smooth and drinkable – what’s more, Sainsbury’s have nailed the resealing system.

Tchibo Exclusive Origins (tchibo.co.uk)
Guatemala medium blend (fairtrade)
250g
2 for £2

This one’s pretty special. A powerfully dark, nutty hit with intense, tangy notes – seems a shame to add milk.

I’m lucky enough to live within sauntering distance of an independent tea & coffee retailer and can buy 125g of top flowery Assam for £1.65. Leaf tea is very much more thrifty than bags, but involves the outlay of as much as £2 for a teapot from the charity shop. JUST DO IT! Coffee has quite a short shelf life once ground, so either buy beans and grind them as and when needed or buy ready ground in small quantities and keep in the fridge, in its bag, sealed in a lidded container. I go for Java or Kenya AA, giving medium roast with true coffee flavour.
