Larder: Baked beans
Ever the symbol of feckless students, too poor and stupid to roast a parsnip, it may come as a surprise to those who don’t check their receipts very often (tut-TUT), that a tin of Heinz baked beans now weighs in at around 63p, the price of at least three Curly Wurlys. In light of this, and the fact annual spending on beans has risen sharply during the recession (Brits spent £300 million last year), we got through a gallon or so of cheapo beans, knocking them back straight up - no toast - and covering our natty waistcoats in bean juice, so we could bring you these. Here, have them.
Essential Waitrose baked beans
41p
Not too sweet, not too salty, with plenty of classic bean taste (you know the one we mean), some great spices and a nice amount of tasty red sauce.
The Co-operative baked beans
47p
These beans have a lot going for them. A full and satisfying flavour, not too much sauce and a good gentle bite – you know they’re there but don’t have to sit picking bean shell from your teeth for hours afterwards.
Asda Organics baked beans
45p
Although the high level of sauce threatens to envelope your toast, these beans have a deep tomatoey aroma and wonderfully soft texture that more than makes up for it.
