Sacha Eats (some more) Asia

Part 2: Seconds anyone?

Marie’s pad Thai with prawns

In part one our Sacha laid a little Japanese, Malaysian and Singaporean cuisine on us. We slopped it right down our bibs and went straight back for more. Here’s what came next…

Ragam (South Indian): # No. 2 Masala dosai, £4.95
I am dosai-obsessed. My favourite is rava dosai, but sadly I cannot find a good one on any London menu (recommendations to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)). Masala dosai comes a close second; spongy rice and lentil flour pancakes, crisp at the edges and filled with coconutty potato curry, spiced with Indian leaves and seeds you can’t get at Tescos. Ragam is unglamorous but friendly, and their masala dosais are the best I’ve tasted outside of South India.

Marie’s Cafe (Thai): # No. 10 Phad Thai, £3.90 w/ chicken, £5.00 w/ prawns (daytime); # No. 39 Phad Thai, £4.50 w/ chicken, £5.50 w/ prawn (evenings)
This greasy spoon-cum-Thai kitchen is well scungy and, judging by the menu, a bit confused – beans on toast or Thai green curry anyone? That’s why I love it. There’s cheesy pop, builders’ tea in mismatched mugs, and an eclectic bunch of regulars. And the staff are cute; once, they swiped my chair from under me to replace it with another (a light refurb during service never hurt anyone). For a fiver you get a sticky, comforting mound of noodles, crushed peanuts, and a generous helping of plump prawns. Plus, phad thai always tastes better with noisy Thai nattering in the background.

Cicada’s chilli salt squid

Cicada (Fusion) – Chilli salt squid, £6.50 (but half price on Mondays, if mentioned when booking)
This one is quite posh – hence dishes are not # numbered – but it makes the list because a) it is half price on Mondays, and b) it has incredibly moreish deep-fried squid. I cannot go without my weekly fix of these light, crunchy tentacles, served in bowls lined with Chinese newspaper. Fish ‘em out with chopsticks and plunge into the sweet chilli side.
