Crumbly toffee apples
Screw the dentist, there’s an apple in there somewhere!

(Makes 5)
5 medium/small apples
Wooden sticks/skewers
225g (8oz) sugar
75ml water
15g (½oz) butter
2 tsp glucose
2 drops of vanilla extract
Peanuts
Crushed digestive biscuits
125g (4oz) chocolate (of your choice)
- Wash and dry the apples. Then stick them on the skewers
- Heat the sugar and water in a saucepan, stirring as you do, until the sugar is dissolved. Next, add the glucose and butter, turn the heat up and then stop stirring until the mixture reaches 150°C (300°F), or hard-crack stage
- Rest the pan in a bowl of hot water, so the toffee doesn’t stick. Then, dip the apples into the toffee, so the whole fruit is covered
- Spread all the crushed biscuits and nuts out on a big plate or tray. Roll the apples in the mixture and then stand (with the stick sticking up) to one side
- Place the chocolate into another bowl over a pan of gently boiling water. Stir, until melted and smooth
- Then, take a spoon and dribble the melted chocolate over the apples
- Stand the apples on a greased tray in the fridge to set. When they’re cold, you can wrap them in cling film, read to eat
Warning: This recipe involves extremely hot sugar, and should only be attempted by (capable) adults, or supervised children
