Brick Lane, in London’s East End, is where – if numerous yellowing newspaper clippings are to be believed – the nation’s foremost curry chefs have all set up shop to compete for a piece of the same small, but no doubt highly lucrative naan. Tayyabs is not on the Lane, but ten minutes round the corner, in neighbouring Whitechapel. A Gobbler favourite, ’yabs is a great place to satiate your appetite for the spicy stuff, without haggling over Poppadoms. And they’ve been knocking out cracking, 100% Halal grub from a quiet street in Whitechapel for the past 30 years.

The menu is of the reassuringly selective type and you’re unlikely to find any nondescript kormas or Tikka Masala amongst a mouth-watering array of mains that includes Karahi Batera (quail) and Lahori Chickar Chana (beats me). An array of succulent grilled meats and kebabs are your best bet as a starter – accompanied by juicy pakora and samosa – and there are roti and naan breads on hand to mop up any sauce which manages to escape the initial stuffing. You may find that, given half a chance, a lot of the choosing will be done for you, and so much food will arrive that your wallet fears the worst; this is the beauty of Tayyabs – the worst never shows, and the price is unlikely to reach far over £12, especially with a bring your own policy on booze.

They have plenty of room to accommodate large groups (Kings Of Leon are reputed to have added curry to their rider, after hiring out the entire restaurant), but make sure you book ahead, as competition for tables gets fierce. Trust us when we say this; you don’t want to end up skulking down Brick Lane because you couldn’t stomach the queue.

It’s running a skeleton service at the moment because of Ramadan, so I would wait until late-October for a repeat visit.

You will also find the reopened Tayyabs much larger! Wasim is expanding upstairs and into the basement. So perhaps this will help with the queueing.

Then again, perhaps not.

This is comfortably my favourite (thrifty) restaurant in London. I love it, especially because I feel achingly superior when anyone brags about their ‘amazing’ and ‘authentic’ curry on Brick Lane.

I’ve never been to Lahore Kebab House, though, which is apparently very similar in price range and quality - perhaps Thrifty Gobbler should do a comparison…
