Although devout meat-eaters, we at Thrifty Gobbler are not averse to the occasional omnivorous bite. Only last week, we were obliged to substitute our preferred porky sausages for the vegetarian alternative, and they weren’t half bad.
On the occasions when we do choose to leave the beef behind, however, we’d just as soon not inhale any incense, wear any hemp, or strum any tofu; and this is where Nottingham’s Crocus Café comes in.
Plonked unassumingly in a colonnade of shops where portions of the Shane Meadows film This Is England were filmed; there is nothing frilly about the café’s location. A social enterprise, established by and to benefit the local community, the Crocus Café is run by volunteers. All the food is sourced ethically – locally wherever possible – and whipped together by their award-winning head chef, who makes the cafes offerings as delicious, healthy and reasonably priced as possible.
Though we are too far away from Nottingham to really contribute or benefit from the social dimension of the café, we are most familiar with the food – and scarcely able to come within an hour of it without stopping by to tuck in.
You can eat as much as you like and barely break the £5 mark, with a wholesome bowl of wild mushroom soup costing £2, and a massive spinach and goat’s cheese lasagne weighing in at £3.50. Crocus standards include the wonderful Greek salads, which include a choice of haloumi or feta cheese, a host of vegetables, and generous dollops of houmous and tzatziki. And then there are the sweets: vegan double chocolate brownies and tangy rhubarb crumbles, to enjoy with your 70p cup of tea, or after your beans on toast.
Eat: Greek salad with haloumi, £3.80
Drink: Cup of tea, 70p
